Why Initiation Disappeared in Modern Society

In many traditional societies, becoming a man was not marked only by age or paperwork. It was marked by challenge, responsibility, sacrifice, guidance, and transformation. A young man crossed a threshold and returned changed.

Today, many of those rites of passage are gone. A man may become an adult legally by date of birth, yet never experience the inner event that builds discipline, clarity, resilience, and purpose. Deep inside, many still wait for someone to say, You are ready. Too often, no one does.

Modern culture often teaches comfort over challenge, distraction over reflection, and avoidance over growth. Yet struggle, responsibility, and facing difficulty are often the very forces that shape maturity and character.

Many men were also raised without strong guidance. Even when fathers were present, the deeper teachings of strength, accountability, emotional control, and direction were not always passed on. Without initiation, a person can carry adult responsibilities while still feeling uncertain within.

The need for initiation has not disappeared. It lives beneath modern life as a human need for meaning, identity, and earned confidence.
