About Indigenous Initiation

Learning by Doing

Participants work directly with the tools, knowledge and activities that make up the program. That can mean operating drones, working with AI and 3D technology, making and shooting bows, learning on the land, creating media, developing products or working alongside people with specialized skills. The emphasis is on doing, experimenting and learning through experience.

Knowledge & Experience

Our programs draw from lived experience, traditional knowledge, academic study, technology, business, media and land-based practice. We also bring in people with specialized knowledge and skills when their experience fits the program being built.

Founder & CEO

Founder & Lead Program Developer

Hotseta (Oscar Dennis Sr.) is the founder and lead program developer of Indigenous Initiation. He brings more than four decades of lived experience, academic study, business development and work with technology to the program.

His academic background includes a Master’s degree and undergraduate degrees in First Nations Studies and Anthropology. His approach is grounded in a First Nations theoretical perspective and strengthened by experience with land-based knowledge, education, entrepreneurship and modern technology.

Indigenous Initiation grew from that combination of knowledge and experience. Rather than beginning from dysfunction, Oscar begins by asking participants, “What’s your dream?” The dream becomes the project, and the project becomes the environment for developing confidence, communication, problem-solving, decision-making and the ability to work with others.

The film brought Oscar's techical sobsidian knapping skills to Tahltan people, settlers of the region and to audiences around the world.
